Throughout the year, I have kept in contact with an organization called APBF, which stands for "A Pit Bull Foundation". Their goal is to promote responsible breed ownership through providing owner and public education, as well as providing medical aid to pit bulls in danger and helping pit bulls be adopted by responsible owners. It's a really worthwhile organization.
My first assignment as a volunteer was a simple but interesting one. I was tasked with the job of calling several apartment complexes in Charlotte and asking if they had any breed restrictions on animals that could live as pets in the complex.
My initial thought was, "Oh, this will be so easy. I'm sure none of them have any restrictions -- in fact, I bet I'm going to sound stupid even asking."
However, this was not the case. Four out of the eight places I called said that there were no pit bulls allowed as pets in their complex.
This completely blew my mind. The dogs are being discriminated against simply for being a certain breed, even if that individual has never done anything wrong. It is punishing the masses for the actions of a few. This is exactly the kind of thing that made me want to do my capstone on pit bulls in the first place -- mindsets like these must be changed.
